Will you open your home this Adopt a Shelter Pet Day?
There’s a dog at TEARS right now who’d really like to sleep on your couch tonight. A cat, too, who’s been waiting weeks for someone to scratch behind her ears. If the house smells like there’s chicken roasting in the oven, even better. If not, no problem. They’re not fussy – they just want in.
April 30 is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, and TEARS Animal Rescue is putting out the call: if you’ve been thinking about bringing a furry companion into your life, this is your sign. The shelter is full. The need is urgent. And with colder temps here already, the timing could not matter more.

The shelter is full, and winter is coming
Right now, TEARS is caring for dozens of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens – all healthy, all loved by the team, and all waiting for the one thing a shelter can’t offer them: a forever home of their own. Some arrived as strays, others were surrendered by owners who could no longer cope. However they got here, every single one of them deserves a second chance.
Cape Town winters are brutal for animals on the streets. Cold, wet, and unforgiving – especially for the very young, the very old and the sick. Every year, as the mercury drops, TEARS sees a sharp increase in animals needing emergency rescue. Dogs pulled from flooded informal settlements. Kittens found shivering under cars. Puppies abandoned on roadsides in the rain.
The more animals TEARS can place in loving homes now, the more space, resources, and capacity they’ll have to take in those vulnerable animals when winter hits hardest. Adopting today doesn’t just change one animal’s life; it opens the door for another one waiting out in the cold.

Why adoption is always a good idea
If you’ve never adopted before, you might be surprised at just how rewarding it is. TEARS’ animals are already sterilised (if old enough), vaccinated, microchipped, and dewormed before they leave the shelter. That means you’re getting a pet who’s been health-checked, assessed for temperament and given a clean bill of health. Not a bad deal, honestly.
It gets better. Ask anyone who’s adopted a rescue animal, and they’ll tell you the same thing: those dogs and cats know. There’s a bond that comes with giving an animal a second chance, and it’s unlike anything else.

What’s waiting for you at Tears
Whether you’re looking for a playful puppy to tire out the kids, a calm older dog who’s happy with a daily walk and a sunny spot on the stoep, a curious kitten with more personality than most people or a low-maintenance cat who just wants a warm lap and a quiet life – TEARS has someone for you.
Every adoption frees up a kennel, a bed, a bowl and the time and energy of a team that’s already stretched thin. It’s one of the most direct, meaningful things you can do to support animal welfare. And all it takes is for you to open your home and heart.

How to adopt
Getting started is simple:
- Visit TEARS in person. The shelter is located in Sunnydale, Cape Town, and the adoption team is available to walk you through the process, introduce you to available animals, and help you find the right match.
- Browse pets ready for adoption online. Head to www.tears.org.za to see who’s looking for a home right now.
- Ask questions. Not sure if your space, lifestyle, or other pets are a good fit? The TEARS’ team will help you figure it out.
- Spread the word. Even if you can’t adopt right now, sharing this message could connect the right person with the right pet. A simple share goes a long way.

One adoption, two lives changed
National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day isn’t just a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder that thousands of animals across South Africa are sitting in shelters right now, hoping today is their day. At TEARS, the team works tirelessly to give every animal in their care the best possible chance. But they can’t do it alone.
So if you’ve got the space and the love, and are even a little curious, come and meet them. You might just find that the friend you didn’t know you needed has been waiting for you all along.
Adopt. Free up space. Help TEARS save more lives this winter.
